About
Measurements of force are common in the industry; the NMISA force laboratory exists to ensure that measurements conducted in South Africa are comparable to international standards.
The NMISA force laboratory is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS).
A set of high accuracy force transducers with different capacities ranging from 2 kN to 5000 kN
The laboratory disseminates traceability in force measurement by performing calibration of force transducers (load cells) in accordance with the international standard, ISO 376:2011 (Metallic materials — Calibration of force-proving instruments used for the verification of uniaxial testing machines).
Key Facts
Force is a product of mass and acceleration, therefore the unit of force (the Newton) is traceable to the SI unit of mass (the kilogram). Force measurements are critical in numerous sectors of industry such as construction, manufacturing, safety, automotive, etc.
The laboratory currently offers ISO 376 compliant load cell calibration services in both compression and tension. The laboratory also provides consultancy and training in accurate force measurements.
How we can help
We provide technical solutions in force measurements to South Africa, the Southern African Development Community member states and to Africa as a continent. We conduct calibrations of tension force transducers by dead weight and by comparison method (range: 1 kN - 250 kN). We also provide force calibration in compression by comparison method (range: 1 kN – 5000 kN). The force laboratory offers consultancy and hands-on training in accurate force measurements. Our personnel has a vast knowledge of force measurements.
Development of National Measurement Standards
The laboratory collaborates with international NMI’s to ensure our measurements are of the highest standards possible. The main development project is:
- Upgrade of the 50 kN dead weight and its associated hydraulic amplification machines
