Physical Metrology

​​​The Physical Metrology Division of the NMISA forms the foundation of all accurate measurement of mass, volume, density, force, torque, hardness, pressure, vacuum, acoustics, ultrasound, vibration and dimensional measurements. The Division's primary function is to ensure that in aforementioned mentioned metrology parameters, South African measurements standards and units are internationally comparable and scientifically valid.

The Division fulfils its mandate to maintain and disseminate the National Measurement Standards (NMS). In addition to the basic maintenance of the NMS, the area provides measurement traceability and advanced measurement assistance to specific industry sectors. In the SADC and African context, Physical Metrology assists with the provision of measurement traceability, the training of metrologists and plays a leading role in the Intra-Africa Metrology System (AFRIMETS) and SADCMET.

Mass and Force Laboratories Involvement in Metrology:

  • Represent SANAS special technical committee for mass metrology and perform technical assessments and inter-laboratory comparisons on behalf of SANAS.
  • Representation on SANS technical committees eg; SC70B and SC70A.
  • Representing South Africa on international committees of the BIPM, Consultative Committee for Mass and Related Quantities and its associated working groups, ensuring equivalence of measurements.
  • In AFRIMETS through training, assessment and piloting comparison.

Length Laboratory Involvement in Metrology:

  • Represents SANAS special technical committee for dimensional metrology and perform technical assessments and inter-laboratory comparison on behalf of SANAS.
  • Representation on various SANS technical committees eg; taxi meters, the material sold by length and speed measuring equipment.
  • Perform various training courses through the NLA.
  • Representing South Africa on various international committees of the BIPM CCL ensuring equivalence of measurements.
  • In AFRIMETS through training, assessment and piloting various comparison.

Acoustics Involvement in Metrology:

  • Accurate and consistent measurements of airborne sound fulfil a wide range of regulatory, health, safety and commercial needs both locally and in support of international trade.
  • Applications arise in the measurement of machinery and product noise, environmental and workplace noise, hearing protection, audiometry, and the quality control of acoustical devices.
  • Participation and representation on International metrology related programs and committees ensure global recognition of measurements performed by industry.
  • Representation on International standards committees (IEC) ensures local requirements are considered.

Vibration Involvement in Metrology:

  • Accurate and consistent measurements of shock and vibration fulfil a wide range of regulatory, health, safety and commercial needs both locally and in support of international trade.
  • Applications arise in the measurement of machinery and product vibration, environmental and workplace vibration, human exposure to vibration, and the quality control of equipment, devices and products.
  • Participation and representation on International metrology related programs and committees ensure global recognition of measurements performed by industry.
  • Representation on International standards committees (ISO) ensures local requirements are considered.

Flow Laboratory Involvement in Metrology:

  • Representing NMISA at SANAS Special Technical Committee for flow.
  • SANAS assessments as technical assessor.
