Welcome to the Research, International and
Infrastructure Development(RIID) section of NMISA
Research, International and Infrastructure Development (RIID) division comprises of two sections; Research and Technology Development (RTD) and Technical Infrastructure Development (TID). RTD is responsible for coordinating and planning of all NMISA cross-cutter research projects which support the government's Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP) in all the identified priority economic sectors.
TID increases the impact of metrology at all levels of society, manages the relationship and obligations of the NMISA within the Metre Convention and related international bodies, ensures the inclusion and participation of metrology in the Technical Infrastructure and develops and fosters metrology amongst the stakeholders and clients.
Research and Technology Development (RTD)
RTD is currently coordinating eight cross-cutter research projects that have been identified and each is headed by a Programme Manager as follows:

Technical Infrastructure Development (TID)
TID manages NMISA's relationships with other NMIs and international organisations and co-ordinates participation in metrology within SADCMET (SADC Cooperation in Measurement Traceability), AFRIMETS (Intra-Africa Metrology System) and other regional metrology organisations (RMOs). The section assists in leveraging funding from regional and international donor sources for metrology consultancy, calibration, collaborative development projects and specialised measurement consultancy to industry. The section plays an extremely important role in developing metrology in Africa and holds the Secretariat for both AFRIMETS and SADCMET. TID also coordinates the Annual SADCMET Water Proficiency Testing Scheme which is a cooperation and collaboration amongst regional laboratories involved in water testing. The PT Scheme involves the chemical and microbiology analysis of water to ensure that water used in the region is within acceptable limits and thus safe for human consumption. In addition, the section collaborates and provides measurement-related expertise and training to the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and has developed a “Measurement Practice Improvement Guide" to create awareness on the importance of measurement and assist SMEs with an intervention in respect of measurements and compliance to industry specifications, standards and legal requirements to enhance competitiveness.
- Management of the relationships and obligations of the NMISA within the Metre Convention and CIPM MRA,
- Collaboration in the NMISA cross-cutter research projects
- Empower SMEs to instil good measurement practice and improve competitiveness
- Leverage funding for collaborative measurement development projects
- Participation in the SADC Water Proficiency Testing Scheme
- Coordination of the calibration of national measurement standards and arrangements regarding training/attachments of NMI metrologists.
NMISA is the only full member of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) in the SADC region and as such provides measurement traceability by calibrating the national measurement standards of most of the National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) in Africa.
