NMISA INTRODUCES THE REVISED SI IN AFRICA AND ITS EFFECT ON NEW TECHNOLOGIES

The National Metrology Institute of South Africa (NMISA) will be hosting two organised industry conferences on the 13th, 15th and 16th of May 2019, at the Capital Hotel, Menlyn Maine in Pretoria, South Africa. The conferences are being held to promote awareness by introducing the implementation of the Revised International System of Units (SI). The activities for the week will conclude the celebration of World Metrology Day on the 20th May 2019. The themes for the conferences include “Metrology meets the 4th Industrial Revolution (IR) and “Shorten the Traceability Chain for Africa".

The “Metrology meets 4th IR" conference will be held on the 13th of May 2019. The programme includes an overview of the previous industrial revolutions, what the current revolution is achieving, its effects, current strategies of the African Union to meet the future challenges, and how stakeholders in Africa can cooperate, not only to negate disruptive technologies, but how to benefit from it.

There will be various delegated speakers and African Scientists that will have robust discussions on Industry 4.0 technologies and how they can be used to benefit Africans as well as the consequences of not engaging with the 4th IR in rural and urban communities and workplace environments. Prominent delegates from the African Union Commission (AUC) will also provide a regional perspective. The “Revised SI Conference" on the 15th and 16th of May 2019, will focus on the impact of the revised SI on Africa, strategies to ensure traceability to the SI units and the linkage to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The international context will be provided by Dr Wynand Louw, President of the International Committee of Weights and Measures (CIPM) and Director for International Liaison at NMISA. Metrology experts will also explain the technicalities of the revision and plans to realise the revised definitions of 4 of the 7 base SI Units. Moreover, prominent delegates in academia will introduce research programmes to develop the realisation techniques with international training experts who will be sharing their knowledge on how to train Metrologists, Scientists and Learners to use the Revised SI. At the close of the conference, Metrologists will have the opportunity to visit the NMISA laboratories on the morning of 17 May.
