The NMISA provides calibration, measurement and analytical services to its customers. We do run proficiency testing schemes for calibration and testing laboratories under contract. Some areas sell products, e.g. certified reference materials.
National Measurement Standards (NMS): The NMISA maintains 42 gazetted national measurement standards (Government Gazette 27269 of 18 February 2005). These standards underpin the South African measurement system and facilitate national traceability of measurements to the SI, or to other international agreed references.
Reference Measurements: The NMISA maintains a number of reference measurements in a number of parameters through which the NMS is disseminated. These methods are verified and validated, and underpinned by Calibration and Measurement Capabilities (CMCs).
Certified reference materials (CRMs) are ‘controls’ or standards used during the analysis and/or quality assurance process of products. Since most analytical instrumentation is comparative, it requires a sample of known composition (reference material) for accurate calibration. These CRMs typically are produced under stringent manufacturing procedures and differ from laboratory reagents in their certification and the traceability of the data provided. Accredited laboratories are required to use CRMs to ensure traceability of their results. The highest order CRMs are usually produced and certified by primary method, and under the jurisdiction of a national metrology body.
